Coastal flooding

Flood modelling in coastal areas

Coastal flooding is typically the result of critical events, such as hurricanes or similar severe storm events that cause storm surges. Tsunami waves created by underwater earthquakes can cause similar damage and casualties. Also, in recent years the effects of climate change induced sea level raise create concern for increased flood risk along coastal areas worldwide. The key issues in coastal flooding are often the maximum water depths, flood extent and timing of the flooding in affected areas.

In order to take proper action to minimise both potential casualties and damages, access to the right tools is essential. Traditionally, 2D models have been applied for coastal flooding studies, as the water column under such conditions often is well-mixed. This makes our MIKE 21, or alternatively MIKE FLOOD software the suitable choice. MIKE 21 is an extremely powerful and efficient tool and has been used successfully in hundreds of coastal flooding studies for more than 35 years. Only for applications near the continental shelf and in presence of a strong, distinct stratification or buoyancy driven current, you may benefit from using a 3D modelling approach such as our MIKE 3 software.

In coastal flooding studies, MIKE 21 and MIKE FLOOD are the ideal tools for:

  • Flood forecast and flood prevention
  • Hazard maps
  • Sea level rise
  • Impact assessment of coastal flooding
  • Operational warning systems

BENEFITS

  • MIKE 21 is the most complete coastal modelling package available, including advanced options for waves and sediment modelling
  • Powerful post-processing and result presentation features
  • Direct coastal flooding impact assessment of urban and riverine areas through MIKE FLOOD coupling
  • 35-year track record in coastal flooding studies
  • Accurate and timely flood predictions and risk assessments
